Tottenham vs Manchester City Odds & Preview

May 4, 2010 in Sport Previews

There is plenty of sports betting action this May as spring heats up with games for every fan. MLB betting is available daily as the second month of baseball begins. Meanwhile, the second leg of Horse Racing’s triple crown is nearing, with Preakness betting underway.  And for basketball fans, the NBA playoffs are in the second round, and there is Celtics Cavaliers betting open in a match that looks to go the distance.

The final week of the Premiership is here with exciting match ups left to determine league births for next season. Tottenham Hotspur travels to Manchester City in a battle that will likely decided fourth position and a qualifying birth in the Champions League.

Hotspur currently holds fourth with 67 points as City sits one point back in fifth. Aston Villa and Liverpool are back at sixth and seventh and have dropped out of the running for a birth, but look to hold on to Europa Cup positions. Both teams have one game left after this tilt with Hotspur having the arguably better fare.  They visit Burnley while City travels to West Ham United.  Should City win, they  will control their fate heading into the final weekend, while a draw will big a boost for Hotspur and they will be in control.  A road win for Tottenham, however, and they will take fourth position and earn their Champions League qualifying position in surprising fashion.

After a loss to Manchester United, Tottenham bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Bolton to stay in fourth.  The loss to United was preceeded by two impressive victories over Arsenal and Chelsea to put Hotspur in a position to compete for the Champions League.

City meanwhile broke the heart of Aston Villa last week with a 3-1 home triumph to keep pace with Hotspur.  Gareth Barry missed the game for the Blues with a hamstring injury but looks to return to the field for the biggest game of the year. However, they will be without Joleon Lescott and Stephen Ireland.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have some key injury concerns of their own. Centre-half Ledley King is questionable with a knee problem, while goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes suffered a muscle injury against Bolton and is also questionable. Should Gomes not start, youngster Ben Alnwick will play in his stead.

Betting lines:  Manchester City at home are favourites, and justly so.  They have played impressively in front of their own fans, winning 12, drawing four, and losing only two this season at the City of Manchester Stadium. While they trail Tottenham by a point in the standings, they have averaged nearly a goal more than Hotspur per game this year.  Statistics matter little though, when compared to confidence and momentum.  Hotspur has played exceptional in the last month and made a strong run at the fourth position. It is clearly in their sights now, and they will earn at least a point should they not outright prevail against City.
